Wenter Beauty must have's

‘Tis the season of dry skin, chapped lips and static hair.
Let’s be honest, we could all use a little more vitamin D in our lives. But not all of us have the luxury of living in sunshine year round. This is Canada after all; where our Twitter feed is often flooded with traffic and weather rants. So why not concentrate on something you can control… taking care of that precious body of yours and feeling good about it! Here are some of our favourite beauty products that help make the winter months a little less blah and a little more fabulous.

Nars Blush:

Not feeling the whole pale look? Cheat it with some blush! This is our little secret to achieving that healthy glow without overdoing it like our friends in the Jersey Shore (sorry Snooki). If you normally wear bronzer in summer, consider switching to a blush for the winter months. We’re a fan of NARS blush which comes in a billion colours and lasts forever.

Clean & Clear® Deep Action Cream Cleanser

You change up your fashion and make up with the season – why not your cleanser? Switch your cleanser to a cream cleanser to give your skin the extra moisture it needs in the winter. We recommend following up with a little Clean & Clear® Dual Action Moisturizer.

Fair Trade Foot Lotion:

Whether you’re dancing it up at a Christmas party or walking in your winter boots all day, you’re tootsies need some love. Our weapon of choice comes from Lush. This minty fresh foot cream not only provides relief, but smells great too! Plus its fun pink colour will bring a smile to your face every time you open it. :)

Bag Balm:

Hands down, one of Lucky’s favourite winter items, this salve is actually designed to soothe cow’s udders. What?! But seriously, it’s a real life-saver for dry, chapped skin. Use it anywhere on your body, as lip balm, or even a cuticle treatment! Thanks for the tip Lucky!

Osis Hair Body:

Let’s be honest, as cute as hats and toques are in the winter, they cause a lot of static and frizz. We’ve discovered this amazing lightweight conditioning spray with anti-static properties so you can control your style even when the toque is on.

Kiehl’s Lip Balm:

Although it feels like Mr. Golden Sun has left our life, the truth is he’s always hanging out. So it’s important to remember SPF on those beautiful lips of yours. Whether you’re planning a New Year’s make out sesh, or simply just walking to school or work, make sure your lips are looking hot!
Got something better? Don’t hold out on us! We want to know your secret weapons or better yet, what you think of ours!

Lemon For Your Skin & Hair's beauty

Sometimes we become so very oversensitive about our skin that we often forget that to take good care of the skin we do not need to burn a hole in our pocket.

Sometimes ordinary fruits and vegetables that are available cheaply in the market are quite beneficial for the skin like lemon.

It is perhaps one fruit that is consumed regularly in households directly and added as secondary tough ups in many dishes to enhance their flavour. However apart from the edible qualities lemon has also several usages for the skin. To know more read on:

To Lighten the skin:

Lemon juice has a strong astringent in it that has proven effects on the skin specially in the lightening of the skin. If the elbow region becomes darkened then mix lemon juice and sugar and rub gently over the area till the sugar granules dissolve. Repeat this thrice every week and you will see the darkness will lighten.

The lips also tend to get darker due to nicotine stains for the chain smokers. Apply lemon juice and leave it on the lips overnight and within 15 days you will see that the dark patches are lightened slowly.

For Hair:

The astringent action along with Vitamin C present in lemon juice also improve hair quality and also give shine to the hair. After washing your hair you can mix 1 part lemon juice with 10 part water and apply on the hair. D not wash and leave it. You can also mix the juice with tea liquor and after washing leave it on the hair.

For Skin:

Those of you who have oily skin and lot of pimples or want to use a natural toner can use lemon juice. You can use lemon juice mixed with your face pack and apply on the skin. You can also use grated lemon skin , on your skin for rejuvenating freshness after bath, and also before bath.

How to Add Volume to Hair Naturally

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Egg
  • Bowl
  • Fork or Whisk
  • Beer
  • Sauce Pan
  • Stove
  1. Look in your refrigerator and see what you have on hand. You can use beer, or eggs, to add volume to your hair. Choose which of the following methods you would like to try.

  2. Eggs
Beat the raw egg in a small bowl. If you have long hair, you will need two eggs. Rub the raw egg into your hair. Cover your hair with a towel or shower cap to prevent dripping. After leaving the egg on for 20 minutes, or longer, rinse the egg from your hair. Make sure the water is as cool as you can get it without being uncomfortable. Warm water will cook the egg. Shampoo again with your normal hair shampoo and dry as usual. You will be amazed at the extra body the egg gives your hair.

  3. Beer
Reduce the beer in a sauce pan over medium heat until it is approximately ¼ the amount. Allow it to cool. Mix it into 1 cup of regular shampoo. Shampoo as you normally would with the "beer" shampoo. Rinse well. This does not need to be refrigerated.

How to Add Body to Hair

Big, bouncy, beautiful hair is an accessory that every female, no matter what age desires. Unfortunately, some of us weren't born with the luscious locks that have natural body and volume. For those that were born with a baby fine or limp mane don't fret, there are plenty of products and tested techniques that will help your hair attain the body you want.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Styling Product
  • Round/Paddle Brush
  • Blow dryer
  • Large Curling Iron

How to Add Body to Hair

  1. Get a good haircut. If your hair is fine or flat, ask your stylist for a shorter haircut that is layered. This will add natural bounce to your hair instantly.

  2. Use body inducing shampoo and conditioning products. Because shampooing and conditioning are the first steps in the hair styling process, it is important that you use products that will facilitate your goal. Avoid products that claim to add moisture, they often leave a heavy residue on your hair, weighing it down. Instead, use a lightweight cleansing shampoo and conditioner that rids your hair of excess oil and build-up. There are also a variety of volumizing shampoos and conditioners on the market; try purchasing sample sizes to determine which ones work best for you.

  3. Apply the proper product(s) to your hair before styling. Try products that claim to texturize, thicken or add volume to your hair. It may take some time to figure out what product works best for you, but when you do find that perfect product, apply it to your roots before styling for optimal body.

  4. Utilize the proper styling tools. The thickness and texture of your hair will determine the tools you will need to attain body. Most people should begin by blow-drying their hair with a round or large paddle brush. First, section off your hair to focus on one area at a time. Using whatever brush you prefer, blow dry your hair while using your brush to pull it towards the ceiling. If you have naturally tamed hair, you can section it off with rollers and then blow dry. Once your hair is dry, determine if it needs additional styling. Big barreled curling irons are also a great way to smooth hair will adding body.

How to get curly hair straight DIY

Vanessa Hudgens

How to get your curly, uncontrollable, frizzy hair Shiny and straight! Without spending salon prices.. if you have tried everything, trust me, my hair is course, and extremely frizzy and it works for me!
Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Any kind of straightener
  • Con air, Chi, etc..
  1. Wash hair throughly, make sure you get it ALL out. Most people make the mistake of  forgetting that last bit of conditioner because they are in a hurry. Make sure it is all out.

  2. I find it easier for myself to towel dry my hair. If you have very long or thick hair you might want to let it dry over night. Using a blow dryer just adds to the frizziness and makes it harder to work with.

  3. After you have washed and towel dried your hair. Plug in your straightener. Put your hair in a pony tail and pull out small sections at a time starting with the bottom back. For really coarse hair, it may take several strokes of the straightener to become flat and straight. If this applies to you, try smaller sections at a time.

  4. once you are finally done straightening and it is to your liking - You are ready to go! Be sure you unplug your straighter and allow it to cool off before storing it. If you find that your hair is "big" .. frizzy or static.. Do NOT put water on your hair or it will become curly again. For better results and prevention of split ends, You can add a heat protect before you straighten to dry with your hair, but in some cases this could cause your scalp to get oily. Also, another prevention is to not wash your hair every single day. If you have naturally curly hair, it is very hard to lock in the moisture it needs. Typical hair washing should be 2-3 days.

The Coolest Hair Cuts: Layers and Bangs

All-one-length tresses are totally over. To look up-to-the-minute sexy, you've gotta snip some bouncy layers or hip bangs into your locks. We help you choose the look that's right for you.
Everyone's doing it. From screen stars to pop singers, all the trendsetting celebs are updating their tresses by getting piecey layers or eye-skimming bangs sliced into their locks. And there's a good reason: "Adding any kind of face-framing pieces to the style you have makes it much more flattering to your features and a whole lot sexier," says Oscar Blandi, the NYC stylist and salon owner who created the looks on these pages. And what's great about both these mane effects is that they don't require losing lots of length or making a dramatic change.

To Layer Your Locks

All-one-length strands may have looked good on Marcia Brady, but today's hottest stars are all about alluring, swinging hair that has tons of body. And the good news is, you don't have to be as tress-blessed as Courteney Cox Arquette to work this style. "Anyone can wear layers and incorporating some into your existing cut is the easiest way to give it a sexy, more modern look," says Blandi. But not all layers are created equal. "You have to match them to your natural hair texture," he says. Here, how to know which kind is right for your mane type.

If you have a curly coif, go for long, graduated layers all over your head to give your spirals definition so they are less frizz-prone.

If your strands are superfine, make some of your layers around ear-length to get volume at the roots.

If your mane is straight or kind of wavy and you want to make it look more shapely, add layers in the underneath section of your hair for a shaggy, bedhead look.

If your locks are ultrathick and you need to thin them out, ask your stylist to hold the scissors vertically while cutting the layers to take away the bulk.

Styling Secrets

Heed these pro tricks to get the layered-locks effect shown above. First, coat damp strands with a smoothing serum, then blow-dry your roots. Once they're dry, attach a slanted nozzle to the dryer and, starting at the back of your head, wrap two-inch sections of hair around a round brush, one at a time. To get the most volume, brush these sections of hair upward as you dry, says Blandi. When you get to the front section of your hair, dry it inward, toward your face. Next, mix more shine serum with a dab of pomade in your palm, then run it from your ears down to accentuate your layers. Flip your head over, blast with cool air, flip upright, and your mane will have a tousled effect, says Blandi.

To Bring on the Bangs

If you haven't worn fringe since you had training wheels on your bike, you'll be happy to hear that they've come a long way. The newest bangs range from long and blunt to side-swept and wispy, which means every girl can find a style that's perfect for her. "Bangs will look good on just about anyone. The key is determining the type that best complements your face shape," says Blandi. Here, his guide for figuring out which fringe is ideal for you:
If your face is round, the most flattering effect is long, feathery bangs that curve into your face to minimize your full cheeks and add contour to your features. If your face is long, go for blunt brow-level bangs that cover your forehead and create the illusion of a more oval-shaped face. Also, ask your stylist to add longer layers at the sides.
If your face is square, check out long, side-swept bangs that taper into layers near your jaw. This style will help soften the angles of your face. Snip tip: Make sure your stylist sees your locks when they're dry first, since hair is longer when it's wet. You don't want the stylist to screw up and snip off too much.

Styling Secrets

When blow-drying your bangs, the trick is to tackle them when they're sopping wet. To get perfect results, first apply a small drop of a light shine serum to the area. Then clamp a two-inch section of bangs between two fingers and blow-dry the roots only; alternate aiming the dryer above and below the roots so they don't get too flat or too puffy. When all the roots are almost dry but the ends are still damp, use a small, flat brush to curve the ends under while you blow-dry. If you want your bangs stick straight, smooth them out by running a small flatiron from midlength down. Finish with a mist of hair spray.

Haircuts For Teenage Girls

Teenage girls often get excited about trying out new things. Be it grooming products, dresses, make up or even the hairstyle, most of the young girls want to be updated with the latest trend or at least sport the most stylish look. To serve the varying needs of teenagers, hair stylists are coming up with a variety of ideas. Over the years, a number of variations have been brought to conventional hairstyles, like bobs and straight cut. Go through the following and get to know about some of the popular haircuts for teenage girls.

Hairstyles For A Teen Girl

The Pixie Cut

Teenage girls love to wear the pixie-cut look. The short hairstyle is perfect for a funky look. A number of layers can bring a dramatic appearance to this cut. Even though it is cropped very short, the haircut style is versatile. In order to maintain the eye-catching appearance of the haircut, shampoo and condition your hair. Towel-dry it and apply a mild hair gel or styling wax.

Bob

Bob has been in vogue since ages. Short angled bob is in the latest trend for teenagers. Although bob is adaptable to all facial shapes, the haircut looks best on round faces. Use razor on the ends of the hair locks. Straight tresses will look sleek and make your face appear thinner, if you have chubby cheeks. After shampooing & conditioning, apply a dab of straightening balm to towel-dried hair.

Layered Haircut

For teenagers with long hair, a layered haircut will look cool. Apart from being very stylish, layers tend to add volume to hair. Moreover, the haircut frames the face well and helps highlight the prominent facial features. You may increase the number of layers, depending upon your facial structure. Make sure that the top layers are short, with flicks. Color your hair completely or highlight the strands.

Shag Haircut

This haircut is typically short and layered. You will find more layers at the crown of the head than below. This haircut can be modified according to the hair type and facial features. If you are blessed with natural curls, this haircut will look great! You can also create curls with rollers. After removing the curlers, arrange the locks as you desire, with the help of your fingers. Tie bobby pins and you are done with your hairstyle! This hairdo is easy to manage and looks great!

Shine Your Hair & Change Your LooK

Dull and dreary hair takes away half the beauty of the face. Healthy, glossy, manageable hair that reflects light and falls around the face beautifully, is the dream of every woman that is not so difficult to attain after all. Here are a few tips to make your hair shine:
  • Bring instant shine to your hair by lightly beating two eggs in milk and massaging them in your hair thoroughly. Rinse after five minutes.
  • A little vodka in your shampoo, if used occasionally, can make your thick hair shine instantly.
  • Yet another way to make your hair shine for blondes is to add two tablespoons of lemon juice in your rinse water after shampooing, while brunettes and redheads can add apple cider vinegar to their rinse water.
  • Everybody can get a vibrant hair color by wisely using his or her garden products! Brunettes can use handful of fresh rosemary sprigs, blondes can use dried chamomile, orange-tone redheads can use chopped up carrot while berry-tone redheads can use chopped up beet. Boil one quart of water. Tie the suitable ingredient according to your hair color in a piece of doubled cheesecloth and toss it into the boiling water. Remove them from heat and let the water soak the color for about 10 minutes. Then, remove the cheesecloth bag. Shampoo and rinse your hair thoroughly. Pour the color enhancer you have prepared over your hair, while it is warm. Be sure it is not hot. Rinse it finally with a quart of cold water. Do this once a month for that lustrous hair posed by models.
  • Honey is good for skin and hair. Take 4 cups of warm water and stir 1 teaspoon of honey in it. Pour it into your hair after shampooing and let the hair dry as normal. You don't need to rinse it.
  • Over-processed hair lose their shine too so be careful nor to overuse all those chemical hair products in the market. Silicone products add shine to hair momentarily but are difficult to wash out causing a buildup that make your hair dull. Vinegar rinse should be used sparingly too or it may dry out your hair.
  • Cold water rinsing makes your hair look shinier as it closes and smoothens the hair cuticle. To further enhance the shine, you can use a finishing crème during and after blow-drying your hair.
  • Adding shine to gray hair and keeping them from getting that yellow tint can be difficult. However a professional gloss treatment at the salon seals the cuticle and makes the hair look shinier than ever. It lasts for five weeks.
  • Heat activated shampoos and weekly deep conditioning for your hair keep them glossy.

Bad Hair Days

Everybody has to go through some bad hair days when your normally manageable tresses seem to go wild and just do not settle in the desired style. The best way to avoid them is to get a good haircut that suits your hair type and lifestyle. If you do not have time to devote much attention to your hair, go for low-maintenance style. Naturally straight hair will remain more manageable in sleek styles while curly hair may get stubborn sometimes. Living in regions that have high humidity levels may make it difficult to maintain a sleek flyaway look for long. So, it is better to keep simple things in mind and get a smart cut to avoid facing the music later. It is also better to get the trimming done regularly to keep the hair manageable. Yet another way to keep the bad hair days off your shoulders is to use hair products, shampoo and conditioner that suit your hair type and take care of their specific needs.
Dry hair will need moisturizing shampoo while greasy hair will need one with oil control. Also always remember to wash your hair thoroughly and rinse away all the traces of conditioner and other hair styling products that you use to avoid buildups later that make hair look dull and matted. You can also use detoxifying products to banish the buildups. Wet hair get frizzy so make sure that your hair are dry before styling them. You can wet them a little, when needed. Heat damages the hair too, so use blow dryers, heated rollers, tongs and straightening irons as rarely as possible and minimize the damage done by them by using hair products meant specially for the purpose. For dull and limp hair, you can try a deep conditioning treatment and rinsing your hair with cold water. A wide-toothed comb is better than a hairbrush to tame the unwieldy curls.
Cotton pillowcase is better to use, as it does not let your hair slide as often in sleep as satin pillowcase does. Also using hair wax as a finishing touch to style you hair is quite useful, especially in case of curly and coarse hair while flyaway hair can use fixing spray to keep them manageable. The best way to hide a bad hair day for longer hair is to make a low ponytail at the nape of your neck, while shorter hair can be swept back for the sleek effect and can be treated with a high shine wax. Instant glamorized hair products can divert anyone's attention from the worst hair days, yet it is better to use a daily moisturizer on coarse hair and give them a weekly deep-conditioning treatment to keep your hair healthy than trying to hide them later. Hair masks once every fortnight will also keep your hair soft and supple. Yet another way is to get hair extensions like many of our starlets do.
