Ultra Glossy Hair

At the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Awards Gala in New York City, Jennifer Garner's super shiny hair stole the show. If you're wanting to have your hair take center stage, turn to silicone before you style. A mist of a lightweight formula on damp strands will infuse any look with extra luminosity.

wear SPF everyday

Any skin-savvy peeps will tell you that SPF is the most effective means of slowing down the ageing process. Make sure your daily moisturiser contains at least SPF15, and for gawd’s sake, use it all year round! The sun may be weaker come winter, but those sneaky UVA rays (responsible for damage and ageing) are present whatever the weather.

2011 Golden Globe Awards: Best Dressed

Oh, what a night! Glammed-up celebs made for a dazzling red carpet, showing up in one-shoulder gowns, sexy strapless numbers, minimalist Calvin Klein, and lots of nude. Claire Danes and Emma Stone wowed in sherbet-colored Calvin gowns; Eva Longoria brought sexy back in a sophisticated black Zac Posen; Olivia Wilde fulfilled a sparkling fantasy in her chocolate-hued Marchesa number; and Anne Hathaway stunned in a slim sequin Armani gown. Now it's time for you to tell us: who was best dressed at the Golden Globes?

2011 Golden Globes Afterparty: Natalie Portman

From the look of the poll, you seem to have mixed feelings about Natalie Portman's Golden Globes red carpet look — but what do you think of her afterparty style? Natalie went casual-chic at the Fox Searchlight party, changing into a pleated, trapeze-style Azzaro minidress. She also ditched her high heels in favor of a pair of metallic silver, pregnancy-friendly flats and toted the best accessory of the night — her best actress Golden Globe! You can't blame a girl for wanting to be comfortable, but what do you think of her afterparty ensemble?

Chunky Sweaters

As the days get colder, everyone is looking for warm yet stylish clothes. Oversized, chunky sweaters have been seen on celebrities like Sandra Bullock and Season 8 of Project Runway. In a recent challenge, designers had to create a look that Jackie Kennedy would wear today. Gretchen created an edgy look based around a big, beige sweater. Complete this look by pairing it with a cute belt and over-sized jewelry.

Rihanna’s Style Evolution

She's fierce, she's fabulous and she's one of the fashion pack's current favourite darlings - but it hasn't always been that way. From cropped tops to that famous cropped 'do: we chart the good girl gone bad's style highs and low.

Believe it or not, Rihanna was only seventeen when this snap was taken. Signed up to Def Jam recordings by Jay-Z in 2004, it was only a year later she released chart-busting album Music of the Sun – and burst onto the international fame stage.

Hair conditioner myths and half-truths

Whatever your hair type, conditioner can add lustre to your locks.

Hair conditioner is a surprisingly recent addition to the standard beauty product range, but its quality and effects have improved radically since it was introduced, and it's now an essential for most women – and many men, too. Its benefits include strengthening hair and leaving it softer, shinier and easier to manage. According to Dr Steve Shiel of Pantene, conditioner protects and repairs and, regardless of hair type, anyone with hair over 10 centimetres long can benefit from using it.
null

Some myths and half-truths persist, however, that make some people reluctant to use conditioner, claiming that they don't like the effect it has on their hair. Shiel suggests that many of the people who say hair conditioner leaves their hair feeling dull or lank have not given the newer products a chance, or are simply using the conditioner incorrectly. In fact, modern hair conditioners are designed specifically to increase the feeling of lightness, and their main objective is to leave hair softer, shinier and sleeker by reducing static build-up.

The way in which the conditioner is applied is absolutely key to achieving these results. Typically, the roots of the hair do not need extra conditioning, so the product should be applied from half-way down the hair shaft and extended downwards to the tips. The quantity used is important, too, with the tendency being to use too much. Exactly how much you need will depend on a number of factors – the length of your hair, how dry it is, how often you condition, and even the type of conditioner you use – but a dollop the size of a walnut should be plenty.

So, with that in mind, let's take a look at four basic myths:
  • “After conditioning, my hair feels greasy”
As long as we apply the product correctly – from mid-way down the shaft and downwards to the tip, avoiding the roots – the effect will be to moisturise the needy zones, not over-moisturise the areas of hair that don't need it.
  • “Conditioning leaves my hair flat with no volume”
Make sure you're using the right type of conditioner for the effect you want to achieve. There is a wide variety of products on the market, so choose the one that's appropriate depending on whether you want your hair to look sleeker, to define the curls or give body and volume etc.
  • “You only need to use conditioner on damaged hair”
Conditioner certainly has a restorative function, so should be used on coloured and damaged hair, but it also has a preventative function and helps protect from external factors that can cause damage – the weather, aggressive hair treatments, the hair dryer... As always, prevention is better than cure.
  • “Conditioner takes the shine away”
One of the things that conditioner will do, if applied correctly, is to close the hair cuticle – the outer layer of the hair – and make it smoother. This makes the surface sleeker and more reflective, meaning that your hair should look brighter and shinier.

Straight talk about hair irons

Whether you call them flat irons or straighteners, many women find these gadgets an essential element in their beauty toolkit. Hair irons have been around for over a century but in recent years there have been many technological advances and improvements.

In the past, lack of temperature control and the use of low-grade materials meant anyone who aspired to straighter hair put their locks at risk with each use. Now, however, most hair irons are made of ceramic, which experts agree gives better results as well as being much gentler on the hair. The secret lies in the fact that temperature is more easily controlled and heat more evenly distributed. It's worth spending a little more for better quality hair irons with ceramic heating elements rather than a cheaper model that has a coating that only looks like ceramic and that will wear off quickly.
null

Even with modern technology, you need to be wary just how often you use a straightener, but by following our suggestions, you should get the best results.
  • Unless the model you are using specifically says it is suitable for wet hair, only use a flat iron on completely dry hair.
  • Wash your hair and apply conditioner – the straightening process is tough on your locks, so they're going to need nourishing to compensate.
  • If you use a hair dryer, you can start the process at this stage by encouraging your hair into the straight style you are aiming for while you blow it dry.
  • Once dry, divide your hair into small thin sections and work on each in turn, making sure each strand is tangle-free before you straighten it.
  • You may not need to actually straighten every single section. Carefully choosing which sections to treat may be sufficient to reduce the frizz and will have a less damaging effect in the long term.
  • As you slide the iron down the shaft of the hair from the roots towards the ends, you shouldn't stop, but should cover the whole length in one smooth movement. Jerky movements will tend to open the hair cuticle and take the shine out of your hair.
  • Remember that moisture will make your barnet frizz again, so carry an umbrella and don't expect the effect to last in humid atmospheres.

Note that any heat treatment has a tendency to weaken the hair, which makes it more brittle and difficult to comb. There are heat protection products available which you should be using if you often use hair driers, curling tongs and flat irons on your hair.

Top health and beauty tip of the week

  • Help blend concealer that’s too pale for sunkissed skin with a swish of bronzing powder over the top

  • Freeze a few eye drops on a spoon and hold against skin for a minute to shrink summer spots and reduce redness

  • It's easy to forget how much hands are exposed to sunlight so wear hand cream with SPF, especially while driving

  • Use a little moisturiser to blend in around the edges where you've applied fake tan so you don't end up with obvious lines.

  • Thinking of whitening your teeth? Go for a professional clean first so the active ingredients don’t have to fight through plaque

  • Naturally frizzy hair blows out like a triangle in the wrong conditions so have long layers cut in to control the shape

  • Add definition to cheekbones by sweeping bronzer beneath the bone before adding blush along the bone itself

  • If your under-eye concealer looks too heavy and caked on, dab a little moisturiser around the edges

  • Using a plain waxy lip salve can actually make lips drier because the skin beneath doesn’t adapt to colder conditions. Instead use balms that contain extra moisturising and skin strengthening ingredients

  • The more flavours in your food, the more the appetite is stimulated so keeping meals fairly plain, with fewer than six different tastes, may reduce the amount you eat

  • Add milk to your favourite essential oil to help it disperse in water for a scented bathtime treat

  • If your hair’s looking limp, give it a lift at the roots by pushing your opened fingers through and sliding them back and forth a few times against the scalp – the friction causes hair to stand out, giving the whole head more volume.

  • Be careful when spritzing perfume all over your neck – UVA light will cause photoactivation that can lead to mottled-looking skin, even via a car window. Instead dab your scent out of sight of light

  • If you have dry skin, skip toner after cleansing as it simply removes any conditioning ingredients left on the skin. Instead apply moisturiser straight away to seal them in

  • If you're using self-tan to give your complexion a little burst of colour, apply the product to your face before brushing your teeth. Flecks of toothpaste can lighten spots of self-tanned skin

  • Clear up make-up cluttering your bedroom and bathroom with a desk tidy from a stationers. The pots for pens are ideal for storing eye- and lip-liners, mascaras, lip glosses and brushes while the drawers keep hair clips and grips out of the way

  • Don’t say goodbye to your sunscreen just because it's winter. Before you leave your house, apply a sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 or more to protect your skin from the elements. Or, choose a product that combines sunscreen with a moisturizer

  • Want to make your lipstick last longer? Choose a matte formulation – glossing ingredients mean pigment slides off the lips – apply then blot with tissue before slicking on a second layer which ‘sticks’ to the first for true staying power

  • Keep cotton wool pads soaked in toner in the fridge over Christmas to cool and soothe tired or hungover eyes and reduce puffiness.

  • Apply glittery eye make-up before foundation (smooth a layer of concealer over lids first to give the eyeshadow staying power) so you don’t ruin your base wiping away speckles that inevitably fall during application

  • The skin under the eyes is the thinnest on the face and prone to wrinkling. So always dab rather than stroking or wiping creams and make-up along, to avoid pulling the delicate skin, which can lead to lines

  • If you don’t have time to leave 30 minutes between moisturiser and make-up, place a tissue over your face and pat with your hands to absorb moisturiser still on the surface and avoid cosmetics on top sliding off

  • Don’t test new foundation on the back of your hand where your skin tone is completely different from your face. Try it on your jawline instead. If it 'disappears' into your skin, you’ve got the perfect match

  • Keeping nail polish in the fridge simply makes drips harden around the neck. Keep it instead at room temperature although out of direct sunlight, which makes the pigments separate

  • Coming up to the party season, stroking hair serum down the centre of legs, across shoulders and even dabbed onto the décolleté grabs the light to make skin look luminescent

  • If you've overdone the blusher or eyeshadow, sweep a light layer of face powder over the top to soften the lines

  • Apply foundation and powder as a base over eyelids before eyeshadow or eyeliner. It will help keep both in place for longer without creasing or smudging

  • If you smudge your nail polish, immediately lick a finger and smooth over the top. Saliva contains a compound that reacts with polish so you can soften and blend the surface

  • Stroke a little hair serum down the centre of legs when you’re wearing a sexy skirt or frock to catch the light and draw the eye downwards which creates the illusion of longer pins

  • Mix liquid foundation with a little highlighter for a more dewy finish with added luminescence that catches the light to create a truly glowing complexion

  • Lipstick can make lips look less plump than gloss – but gives you more intense colour. Combine the benefits of both with a dab of gold, iridescent gloss just in the centre of lips and in the cupid’s bow, for an instantly sexier finish

  • Wearing nail polish does more than make your fingertips look fabulous; it adds a protective layer, too, that really does strengthen them against knocks that can split or break the nail

  • Most compact eye shadows have a highlighter in either gold or silver. Dip a blusher brush into the palette and sweep the lightest shade just on top of your cheekbones and down the bridge of your nose for instant glow without buying separate highlighter - Caroline Barnes, make-up artist for Olay touch of foundation

  • Mend a torn nail by applying a coat of varnish over the entire nail, placing a tiny piece of loo roll over the split, then immediately sealing it in place with another coat of polish

  • Keep eyeshadow in place for longer by applying a light layer of concealer to the eyelid first – it forms a barrier against the skin’s natural oils that lead to creasing - Make-up artist Caroline Barnes

  • We’ve all learned the importance of using daily sun protection on our faces, but don’t forget to extend it down the neck, the décolletage and the backs of hands, too. They’re all areas exposed to the sun as much as the face, yet without as much fat behind the skin, are prone to significant crepiness as we age - Dr Nick Lowe, dermatologist

  • If the results of your latest self-tan application are patchy with tell-tale streaks, use a little nail polish remover on a cotton wool pad to blend in the areas where you look Tango-d. It's harsh, though, so do a patch test first on a tiny area and avoid altogether if you have sensitive skin or skin disorders

  • New Year skin care

Now the Christmas and New Year festivities are over, treat your skin to some TLC.

Hopefully you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas season with friends and family; sadly, though, all that festive fun won't have done your complexion any favours. And it isn't just your face that will have suffered: high heels, late nights, a rich diet and too much alcohol, not to mention the wintery weather... your whole system has been through a lot recently and now it deserves a little pampering. We can't do much about the weather, but we can give you a few tips to help repair some of the damage and restore vitality to your skin.

    null
    • Use a conditioning body mask to soften and repair the winter damage to your skin. And use a face mask, too, not just for the benefits of the mask itself, but for the 15 minutes or so you take to sit still, listening to your favourite relaxing music: this short disconnection from the world has a marvellous repairing effect inside and out.

    • Take a shower or bath with a cleansing gel to gently cleanse the skin. In winter it's particularly important to use products that nourish and restore the skin's protective barrier. Finish off with your favourite moisturising product.
    • Take a break from the drink. Try a week or two – or more – with no champagne, no wine... nothing but water. And plenty of it, as it really does do wonders for your skin. If you prefer, you can warm it up a bit and add a little lemon – it's a great way to start the day and will help to rehydrate your skin from within as well as aiding digestion. If you really don't like water, herbal and fruit teas can be a good alternative.
    • Try taking a bath with a detox product. Use an exfoliant or a mitt to stimulate circulation and eliminate toxins. If you use a face mask at the same time, the steam will increase the mask's effectiveness. After the bath, try applying a product that will stimulate and get your blood moving. Both your mind and your skin will thank you.

    • High heels and dancing may be fun at the time, but your feet are probably crying out for a massage with a rich moisturising cream. After the massage, pop on some warm socks and settle down with your feet up for the evening.

Neon prints and lashings of leather: the top trends not to be missed this spring

With glamorous A-listers filling up the front rows at London Fashion Week, the catwalk can often be overlooked. But this season's bold trends are impossible not to notice.

With designers fusing bright colours and trendy textures, the Spring-Summer collection is hot and ready to trot from the runway straight to the High Street.

Leather is a hit trend this season, be it the classic biker jacket or the sexy mini-skirt. The ultimate emblem of cool, it's being teamed with floral prints and mini-dresses to soften the tough-girl edge.

Spring has awakened a love of all things neon. It's time to throw away the pastels and embrace the bold as bright pink, orange and green take centre-stage.

Belts are another must-have for this season. Whether teamed with trousers, skirts or dresses, worn around the waist they make looking fashionable a cinch.

After seasons of dress domination, trousers are finally making a comeback. In a nod to the Seventies, flares are the new skinny. Belted at the waist, the bell-bottoms compliment the fuller figure and also look great on a smaller frame.

Fashion Tips: 10 Fashion Rules for Wearing Denim in winter 2011

    undefined

Jeans have survived generation after generation of come-and-go fashion fads, yet stand firm as an essential wardrobe staple.
The key to looking good in denim is about understanding your body shape to find the perfect fit.
Don't be a slave to fashion, and know how to accessorize jeans with pieces that compliment your look, rather than cheapen it.

Rule 1 - The Perfect Fit

    • Ill-fitting jeans do nothing for your style or your silhouette. Finding the right pair is not so much about fashion, but more about style. Concern yourself with finding the correct shape for your body type rather than keeping up with the latest trend. Seek advice from a store's personal shopper usually the service is free. Alternatively go to your favorite specialist jeans store and ask for help. These sales consultants know their stock well and have a good idea about each brand's styles and fits.

Rule 2 - Patience Pays Off

    • There is no quick fix to finding the perfect pair of jeans. Even though you may be faithful to a particular brand, they will vary from cut to cut. No matter what size and shape you are, be prepared to go from shop to shop and spend several hours in the fitting room. When you finally find a fit that really flatters your silhouette, it is worth it in the end. Save time by researching your body type and potential suitable styles on the net. When you get to a store you will then know which ones to try.

Rule 3 - Work and Play

    • ''Denim should be used but not abused,''. This celebrity stylist guru goes on to warn that there is a time and a place for jeans, no matter how dressy they may be. Whilst they are ok for casual wear, a nightclub and semi-formal social occasions (and in some cases, work) when it comes to attending a big corporate event, a dress or smart pants win over every time. No matter how you dress it up, denim is always denim.

Rule 4 -Dress Up Your Jeans

    • For a party, date or meal out, dress up jeans with a chic, trendy scarf or lots of great jewelry. Add a pair of flashy flats or look-at-me heels and you're off! A tucked-in classic white shirt and a narrow belt threaded through the belt loops can transform a casual pair of jeans into something much more elegant

Rule 5 - Fleeting Fashion Fads

    • Do not follow short-lived seasonal trends at the expense of spoiling your look. Low-rise hipsters work on very few body shapes, and skinny jeans are best left to those with long legs and slim hips, although there are some exceptions. Flares and boot-leg cuts are far more forgiving, as are high or mid-waisted jeans.

Rule 6 - The Overstuffed Sausage Factor

    • Avoid styles which cut into your hips or constrict your legs to the point of discomfort, (as in super-skinny jeans). High-waisted jeans are kinder to large stomachs and bottoms, not forgetting oneof the greatest recent fashion inventions, tummy-tuck jeans. No matter how much you love that skinny pair on the rack, do not, repeat not, try to squeeze yourself into too-tight jeans, at the expense of looking like an overstuffed sausage.

    Rule 7 -Butt Cleavage

    • Avoid butt-cleavage at all costs. In the UK, this is known as ''Builder's Bum,'' an unsightly offering of butt peeking out from your waistband, made even worse if it tackily shows a glimpse of thong. If you are wearing low-waisted jeans, then make sure you pull up the waistband before you sit down, and pull down your shirt or top.

Rule 8 -Overspill - "The Muffin Top"

    • Due to the current trend in low-waisted hipsters, a muffin top, caused by ill-fitting jeans is a common site amongst women who are trying too hard to be fashionable. Avoid any jeans which cause your flesh to spill out over the top of your waistband. Don't be downhearted - persevere until you find a better style, as this is usually not so much about size but more about finding the right cut and fit.

    Rule 9 - Colored Jeans

    • White is the new black this season, so white jeans are currently chic and trendy. Don't overdo other colors though, unless it's black or gray, which can dress up a pair of denims with an edgy elegance. Although stores are currently full of spring-like colored jeans, these are best left to women the right side of 24 and not a 40-year old.

    Rule 10 - Build a Jeans Wardrobe

    • Having at least one pair of great fitting, go-anywhere jeans is a crucial element in any woman's wardrobe,'' says Zoe. To cover all bases, ideally you should have a pair for smart and casual wear, a close fit and a baggier fit, and a pair in a deep, dark rinse as well as a lighter wash.

Tips On How To Get Flawless Skin

Get Flawless Skin - Jenna Caruana
Get Flawless Skin - Jenna Caruana
Beauty starts from the inside, so you really do need to get a good diet for any of these tips to work. So make sure you get plenty of fruit and veg each day. An easy way is to have a fruit salad for breakfast, and always eat at least 2 vegetables with your dinner. Keep away from processed foods and fatty food as these are bad for you and will cause breakouts, so if you don’t want pimples and spots all over your face this is an important one. The same goes for sugary foods, as the high sugar content causes breakouts. Fresh meat and veg is the way forward. Fish is great for the skin because it contains the omega 3 fatty acids that keep your skin, hair and nails healthy.Keep Make Up Light To Get Flawless Skin
Don’t wear loads of make-up. As tempting as this might be if your skin is not at its best, this will make it harder for the skin to breathe and will also cause the skin to produce more oil, which clogs and causes spots. Also, if you do wear make-up, try to keep it light, and always remove it at the end of the day.
If you really must wear foundation, get one that is light and has vitamins in it. You should also try to use one that has sun protection in it as the sun’s rays damage the skin. Even in winter, you should still use at least SPF15 as there are still UV rays about when it’s cold.
And finally make sure that you keep fit and healthy by exercising, as this is good for all parts of your body and that includes your skin. This will also help to slow the ageing process of the skin.

Preview of Women's Fashion for Spring 2011

There were some memorable fashion moments in 2010 whereby ladies could embrace their curves and there was a move towards more timeless pieces that could transcend seasons. Whilst an element of 2010 continues to embrace that theme there are also some dramatic cuts and colors, which bring women’s fashion for 2011 into the moment.

    Women's Fashion Colors for 2011

The year 2011 looks set to be one of the most colorful on the fashion front, where black is banished to the back of the wardrobe. Spring/summer 2011 is all about wearing complementary colors in a clever combination of warm and cool tones.
Honeysuckle is the color of the moment, a reddish-pinkish hue, which Pantone Colour Institute's Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman says “gets the adrenaline going.” Honeysuckle was prevalent in such spring/summer 2011 designer collections as Lanvin, Marni, Nina Ricci, Donna Karan, Erdem, Christian Dior and Marc Jacobs.

Christmasworld Trends 2011/2012: Decorating Trends for Christmas

Unique, unconventional, glamorous or business casual – with the right decorations, you can give every event that personal touch. For the 2011/2012 season, the designers of stylists bora.herke have discerned four trends for the different types of consumer: the luxuriousness of bountiful scenery, the breadth of gentle horizon, the irrepressible energy of elemental force and the floral lightness of delightful garden.

    Trend Worlds

Christmasworld Decorating Trends 2011/2012 bountiful scenery bountiful scenery

Exotic, refined and extravagant. Superior craftsmanship from Asia and Africa shapes the urbane, spectacular and colourful scenery. Pearls and precious stones are used for decoration. High-quality carved and engraved pieces as well as luxuriant blossoms, embroidery, ethnic prints, batik and kimono designs create a
multicultural chic that has a self-confident and cosmopolitan feel.

Christmasworld Decorating Trends 2011/2012 delightful garden delightful garden

Sporty, feminine and poetic. This fresh theme plays with the
nostalgic charm of the 1950s and transports it to a modern environment. A romantic world is created with sensitivity, informality and self-assurance. Contrasting effects such as checks and stripes, prints, animals and above all floral motifs, millefleurs patterns, climbers and blossoms tempt the visitor with lighthearted charm.

Christmasworld Decorating Trends 2011/2012 elemental force elemental force

Present, powerful and raw. This archaic look is inspired by the forces of nature and the elemental power of rocky landscapes. Traces of wear, ageing processes, unprocessed and unfinished materials dominate this natural style. Patinated, corroded, irregular and primitive surfaces complete the mystic and melancholy natural look.

Christmasworld Decorating Trends 2011/2012 gentle horizon gentle horizon

Orderly, matter-of-fact and unostentatious. Clear lines and expressive materials give this modern style its purist character. A few select objects and large surfaces – some shimmering – convey the intrinsic feel. The attractive interplay between refined and rustic underlines the naturalness of the cultivated and inviting ambience.
