Beauty talk

SADIA MOYEEN Beautician, La Belle, 13/A /2 Kemal Ataturk Avenue , ( 3rd/ 4th fl ) Gulshan -2
There was a time, long long long ago when the only hair accessories available were flowers. Though as far as I am concerned, they still head my list of favourites to dress hair. Fresh jasmine in a bride's braid or roses in her curls are definitely added attractions - ask any groom. Not to mention the heroines of the sixties who started the trend of wearing hair accessories with their bouffants and tight churidar kurtas, there would still be this one Tiger Lilly behind Asha Parek's ear or a huge rose, but they carried it with such élan that we have still not forgotten it. Nor have we forgotten the quivering flower that would magically, and strategically block the kissing lips of the heroes and heroines; us little kids would bend this way and that trying to look past the interrupting flower!
Those were the days; then came the seventies with the thick hair bands of fabric and ribbons and bows that would put a gift wrapping to shame, nevertheless with a charm of its own. Then came the forehead band during the discoing mid and late seventies a la Mithun Chakraborty, Zeenat Aman, John Travolta and so on. Even for me that was too much to swallow; thank God it's all in the past! By this time I was sent off to boarding school and didn't come out until the mid-eighties; no movies, no television, no nothing. Those days it was so uncool to use make up, watch movies or listen to Abba or Air Supply (all of which I secretly loved), and hair accessories? You must be kidding!
Hair accessories and ornaments have from time immemorial been an integral part of the desi woman, from the time when women wore flowers in their hair every single day of their lives, to today, where it has now become seemingly confined to formal occasions only but is still a very crucial part of our culture. Not to mention that jewellery for hair has been an ancient custom; kings and queens and common folk, all wore some form of hair ornaments . Even today, imagine a bride without her tikly or jhoomar (jhapta). How taken aback will we be? So no matter how modern we have become, inherently we, as a race, simply love to get dressed up from head to toe!
Today there are endless options with which to accentuate your hair, from simple scrunge clips that gently hold your hair in a casual style, to hair extensions that can add body or length or both to your hair. These can be weaved into your natural hair or can be clipped on to strategic sections of hair. Ready-made buns, braids with or without ornaments, stones etc; the list of accessories is endless.
Diamante hair clips, combs and brooches are very popular and can look quite good if not too overdone. Dry flowers, feathers, pins, clips, stickers - whatever takes your fancy, as long as you can carry it well.
Everything said and done, nothing like a hair accessory to dress up and brighten your look!

how-water-improves-your-body-and-beauty

Not drinking enough water can increase the probability of health problems and make you look dull.  If you feel weak and your body feels dehydrated, consider drinking more water than you usually drink.  A lack of water in the body causes health disorders.
The effect of water on the body
Water makes up about 71 percent of the body.  It is found in all the tissues and cells that make up the body; it is important for the functioning of organs.
Most of the body’s systems, such as the circulatory system, work with the aid of water.  Our brains and the hormone system is dependent on proper water balance.  It is impossible for a person to survive for more than two weeks without water.  A lack of water causes serious damage to the body within a few days.
What amount of water is essential for the body?
The amount of water needed for proper body function depends on your weight and nutrition.  One liter of water is recommended for every 23-24 kg of bodyweight.
If you weigh about 50 kilograms, you should consume more than 2 liters of water each day to maintain health and good feelings.  The amount of water you require may also vary according to the types of foods and beverages you consume.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are made up of about 90 percent water and supply the body with a lot of water.  If you consume plenty of healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, and beverages such as fresh fruit juice then you may need to drink less water.
Health problems associated with a lack of water
When you are not drinking enough water, your body gets dehydrated.  Feeling thirsty is the first symptom of a dehydrated body.  It is essential that you carry a water bottle everywhere you go, whether its work or school.
A lack of water can cause serious illnesses such as disorders of the excretory system and kidney disorders.  Moreover, a lack of water can cause problems in food digestion and lead to constipation.  On hot days, you may feel dizzy or get headaches.
As tap water contains many chemicals it is recommended that you filter water before drinking it.
Water is a vital element in maintaining the health and beauty of the body.  Consuming adequate amounts of water keeps the skin hydrated and makes it firm.  As a result, you look healthy and have beautiful skin.

Neon prints and lashings of leather: the top trends not to be missed this spring

With glamorous A-listers filling up the front rows at London Fashion Week, the catwalk can often be overlooked. But this season's bold trends are impossible not to notice.

With designers fusing bright colours and trendy textures, the Spring-Summer collection is hot and ready to trot from the runway straight to the High Street.

Leather is a hit trend this season, be it the classic biker jacket or the sexy mini-skirt. The ultimate emblem of cool, it's being teamed with floral prints and mini-dresses to soften the tough-girl edge.

Designers have gone texture-crazy, teaming silky chiffon with fur, leather and lace.

Women everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief as structured dresses come to the fashion forefront. The rigid shapes flatter all sizes, from curvy to super-slim.

Spring has awakened a love of all things neon. It's time to throw away the pastels and embrace the bold as bright pink, orange and green take centre-stage.

Belts are another must-have for this season. Whether teamed with trousers, skirts or dresses, worn around the waist they make looking fashionable a cinch.

After seasons of dress domination, trousers are finally making a comeback. In a nod to the Seventies, flares are the new skinny. Belted at the waist, the bell-bottoms compliment the fuller figure and also look great on a smaller frame.

How to create the waved bob

We caught up with ghd at the 2011 AFI Awards as they created a beachy wave on actress Caitlin Stasey. Here are the steps from Heading Out Hair's Caterina DiBiase, working exclusively with ghd, for how you can recreate the style.
  1. Work in ghd Maximise Mousse all through the hair, then dry in.
  2. Section off the hair then use your ghd Salon Styler to create some loose, semi-curls (they need to have bend, but not be fully curly). Start curling a few inches down from the roots.
  3. Spray the hair with ghd Sea Spray to create a relaxed, beachy texture.
  4. Finally, blast the hair with a hair dryer to break it up.

The key to the look in 2011 is not to overdo the curls - the more relaxed and understated, the better.

The Prettiest Villains

undefinedWhat did you want to be when you grew up? A firefighter, doctor, superhero – the sky was the limit. As kids, all of us had dreams of what our life could possibly look like once we became adults and ‘grew up’. But who says we have to? This Fall, makeup takes a hint from our fav Saturday morning cartoons and Disney flicks to bring us some of the prettiest hues that give a swift POW! ZING! ZAP! right in the you-know-where to any insecurities or self-doubt.

Fall 2011 is all about fun and confidence. Strong, bold, graphic colors that would get Cruella de Vil’s makeup artist excited. And really, as much as everyone likes a good girl (a la Little Mermaid’s Ariel), who doesn’t love a strong, confident, sexy, *ahem* evil character like Ursula? When you are confident and believe in yourself, you automatically give off a positive glow… showing the world the strong woman that you are! If the Evil Queen didn’t believe in herself, who would? The villains are where it’s at. They get all the best costumes, jewelry and makeup anyway – so let’s play dress up!

M.A.C is set to release a whole collection of makeup this Fall aptly named‘Venomous Villains’. They’ve teamed up with Disney to create strong pigments and looks for the pretty little villain in all of us – all inspired by the Disney Villains.
Everything, from the exact colors used from the costumes of the characters to the graphics in the packaging, was done with Disney perfection. As a cartoon addict, daydreamer and 20-something little kid (I even worked at Disney once!), I could NOT be more excited about this collection! Smoky purples and plums (the color of royalty!), golds, and reds (think strong liner, dark brows, confident lips), but with the option of choosing one strong feature at a time – so we don’t look like a cartoon character ourselves!
undefinedAs a nail polish junkie, I can’t bring myself to walk by the polish aisle, with all of its bright hues jumping out at me, and not pick up at least one. Needless to say, I’m super happy that nails have their place in this playfully animated trend. OPI has created a few glittery shades inspired by Disney’s Alice In Wonderland that will simply made you go mad! ‘Off With Her Red’ is an empowering hot red, ‘Absolutely Alice’ is an amazing blue glitter, ‘Mad As A Hatter’ is a marvelous black-multi glitter, and ‘Thanks So Muchness!’ is a must-have red shimmer.
I got the chance to talk with Ali De Bold, Founder of ChickAdvisor.com to chat about these Fall trends. Ali is an inspiration to all of us strong girlies: she’s a cute-as-a-button entrepreneur who genuinely puts her heart and soul into her business, and it shows. Ali planned her wedding out of province, and realized there were virtually no good ‘tested & reviewed’ resources out there for finding the best salons and products, so she made her own! Shortly after filling her sink with half-used product and compiling all the resources she knew of, ChickAdvisor.com was born! It is now a very successful site that allows women all across Canada to review products and services, on everything from fashion to beauty. Gotta love girl power! Watch my video with Ali:

Moral of the story for this season? Stay confident, don’t be afraid to shimmer, let your inner little kid out to play, and have fun with it… you’re sure to let Fall be your storybook ending to Summer!
Keep Smilin’ & Stay Beautiful,

Bronzer for Beginners

undefined
As thoughts of “back to school” enter our minds, we all want to hang on to summer a little bit longer
But, since we all know about how the sun-tanning beds can damage your skin (don’t forget your SPF even in Fall!!) and since I’m not a fan of using self-tanner on the face (I feel it always looks the wrong tone or blotchy and settles in to fine lines on the face) here are my tips on using bronzer!
Look for a bronzer that has a bit more of a golden tone (not an orangey tone). Whether or not it has a small amount of iridescence in it or is matte is up to you… I personally like how iridescence gives the skin a healthy glow. However, a guy might want to choose a matte texture so there’s no “makeup” look to the skin. Choose a colour that isn’t too much darker than your skin (otherwise you’ll look like you are obviously wearing bronzer, or worse… like your face is dirty!). Usually bronzer comes in a range from light, medium or dark. The whole point of bronzer is to look sun kissed, not super-tanned (insert mental image of anyone from ‘Jersey Shore’ here!).
undefined
Use a medium to large fluffy brush. Start light and build if you feel you want to go a bit darker. It’s all about placement with bronzer! I like to start at the temples and work my way in. Dust the bronzer over your forehead, nose, and upper cheekbones (almost imagine a pair of goggles, but more blended), and then also, a bit on the chin. Basically, all the high points of the face where the sun would naturally give you a glow. DON’T put bronzer all over your whole face or your face will be a different shade than your neck!
Your bronzer shouldn’t take place of a powder. Powder is there to control shine, bronzer is to impart colour. Touching up throughout the day with a bronzer isn’t a good idea!
Remember: fluffy brush, start light, placement and blending! Now get out there and get your glow on!!

Wenter Beauty must have's

‘Tis the season of dry skin, chapped lips and static hair.
Let’s be honest, we could all use a little more vitamin D in our lives. But not all of us have the luxury of living in sunshine year round. This is Canada after all; where our Twitter feed is often flooded with traffic and weather rants. So why not concentrate on something you can control… taking care of that precious body of yours and feeling good about it! Here are some of our favourite beauty products that help make the winter months a little less blah and a little more fabulous.

Nars Blush:

Not feeling the whole pale look? Cheat it with some blush! This is our little secret to achieving that healthy glow without overdoing it like our friends in the Jersey Shore (sorry Snooki). If you normally wear bronzer in summer, consider switching to a blush for the winter months. We’re a fan of NARS blush which comes in a billion colours and lasts forever.

Clean & Clear® Deep Action Cream Cleanser

You change up your fashion and make up with the season – why not your cleanser? Switch your cleanser to a cream cleanser to give your skin the extra moisture it needs in the winter. We recommend following up with a little Clean & Clear® Dual Action Moisturizer.

Fair Trade Foot Lotion:

Whether you’re dancing it up at a Christmas party or walking in your winter boots all day, you’re tootsies need some love. Our weapon of choice comes from Lush. This minty fresh foot cream not only provides relief, but smells great too! Plus its fun pink colour will bring a smile to your face every time you open it. :)

Bag Balm:

Hands down, one of Lucky’s favourite winter items, this salve is actually designed to soothe cow’s udders. What?! But seriously, it’s a real life-saver for dry, chapped skin. Use it anywhere on your body, as lip balm, or even a cuticle treatment! Thanks for the tip Lucky!

Osis Hair Body:

Let’s be honest, as cute as hats and toques are in the winter, they cause a lot of static and frizz. We’ve discovered this amazing lightweight conditioning spray with anti-static properties so you can control your style even when the toque is on.

Kiehl’s Lip Balm:

Although it feels like Mr. Golden Sun has left our life, the truth is he’s always hanging out. So it’s important to remember SPF on those beautiful lips of yours. Whether you’re planning a New Year’s make out sesh, or simply just walking to school or work, make sure your lips are looking hot!
Got something better? Don’t hold out on us! We want to know your secret weapons or better yet, what you think of ours!

winter make up tips

As a special holiday gift,  I asked my friend Jean-François to do one of his fantastic makeup tutorials showcasing some winter trends!  I’m a huge fan of his Youtube tutorials and I hope you all are as thrilled as I am to have him join us for this issue of FORA!
In addition, I’ve included a list of essentials that I believe are a MUST in creating your best makeup looks (outside of the makeup colors themselves!)  Holiday season is THE BEST time to cash in on fantastic deals and sets for less at department and drug stores… so you can look naughty OR nice!
Clean, Prepped Skin I can never stress the importance of taking care of your skin enough.  It’s the canvas for every look… with or without makeup! If your skin doesn’t look good, neither will your makeup. Cleanse, Exfoliate, and Moisturize morning and night and you will see a huge difference.  Skincare lines I like are Dermalogica, Clean & Clear, Clarins, and MAC.
Makeup Brushes
Ok, let’s face it.  Those little spongetip applicators that come with the eyeshadow are just… meh.  Ideally, get the best brushes you can afford.  With proper care,  brushes can last you for years!  (I love MAC Cosmetics brushes-they have great sets on sale around the holiday season!! Many drug stores have some decent brushes as well!)  You probably need around 5 or 6 brushes to have what you need to do your whole face:    -powder/blush brush ( a medium size, not too huge)
-small angle brush (for eyeliner and brows)
- medium flat brush (for applying eyeshadows)
-medium teardrop-shaped brush (for blending eyeshadows and doing a crease)
-a lip brush OR a small stiff brush for applying concealer
Eyeshadow Base
Eyeshadow base keeps your eyeshadow on with no creasing or fading for over 12 hours.  I’m not joking!!  It can be worn alone or under powder eyeshadows.
I’d suggest MAC Paints in ‘Bare Canvas’ for lighter/medium skintones and MAC Paint in ‘Bamboom’ for darker skintones.  (The base should be a bit lighter than your skintone, or match it exactly-not darker).  I also like NARS eyeshadow base, and Cover FX Eye Prep.
Mascara
Seriously, why waste time doing your makeup when in an hour you have messy mascara smudges?  Unless you are *actually* going for that Courtney Love/Marilyn Manson look, get a good mascara.  Waterproof doesn’t necessarily mean smudge-proof; if you have oily skin, waterproof may smudge. (they are water-proof, NOT oil-proof.  Oil is what you remove waterproof products with).   Some brands that work well for me are Covergirl Lash Blast, L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara, and Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill Mascara.
Peach/Warm Toned Concealer
You may need help choosing your perfect shade, but your concealer should be slightly more peachy and not *too* much lighter than your own skin.  Peachy/warm concealer tones under the eyes help your skin look bright and hide dark circles.  Concealer that is too yellow under the eyes can look ashy.  I like MAC concealers, Cover FX concealer, and the Lise Watier Portfolio Concealer Wheels.
If you have the essentials, you will be able to create hundreds of makeup looks and just pick up one or two colour trends every season!  Now, ready…set…. MAKEUP!!!

2011 Sneak Peak, fashion tips, Get the Goods

As we begin a new decade, we’re very excited to see what’s next in the world of fashion and beauty. So we asked our resident wardrobe stylist Katie to give us the scoop on what to expect this year. From the bold colours, to the fun tassels, we can’t wait to see what will unfold in 2011!
__________________________________________________________________________________________

Bold Colours

Eye catching hues are the statement piece to have. Whether it is an accessory or a top, it will be sure to liven up your look.
Styling Tip: Don’t be afraid combine different hues – remember no pigment is off limits this season. Try wearing a bold shirt with another bold colour top but be sure to keep in mind the colour wheel. If this doesn’t seem like something you would wear, try a bold colour shirt with a neutral bottom.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

Kitten Heel

More comfortable yes, but not always enticing. This may not be your go-to heel for a night out but they sure could be a go-to for the office or a day of shopping. This way you can be trendy and comfortable and we all know that doesn’t always happen in fashion!
Styling Tip: Add a pair of socks to your heels and you’ll have people noticing your every stride. Remember, kitten heels come in a variety of different shapes, colours, and textures so be sure to find the one that suits you best.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

Seventies:

From geometric patterns, flowery patterns, snake skin and mixed prints to bell bottoms, bow –blouses, roll neck sweaters and jumpsuits, 2011 is the new 70’s.
Styling Tip: Pick and choose the styles you loved from 70’s … remembering not all were trendy. Try finding the right sized wide leg and tuck in a casual top of your choice. Too get the full look, add a belt. This look is easy to dress up and dress down depending on your mood!
__________________________________________________________________________________________

Tassels

Adding a little extra detail can change the whole look and feel to your garment. We will see these not only on bags but on shoes, dresses, belts and much more.
Styling Tip: Hit your next outing wearing a stand out tassel dress – your motion is sure to be eye catching. Or if this seems too out there for you try something a little less loud like a simple belt or pair of earrings.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

Biker-Punk Chic

It looks like leather and studs are here to stay but with a luxe step up. This season mixing pretty girl with a bit of punk is the look you want to achieve.
Styling Tip: Dig out your biker jacket but this time try wearing it over a dress or even a collared shirt. Adding one or two pieces of biker- punk inspired garments will sure put you head of  for this season.

Fav look of the week

We’d be lying if we said we weren’t envious of all the cool clothes our hosts get to wear. Just walking into their wardrobe room makes our eyes light up. We’re amazed at how quickly our hosts can throw together an outfit and completely make it their own.

Bridal Makeup, Bridal Face Makeup

Bridal Makeup
Bridal Makeup, Wedding Day is the most important day in the life of a woman and every young girl desires to look at her best on this blessed day in her life. Here are some tips to make you look as gorgeous as a queen:
  • Use heavy-pigmented cream foundation and layer it with powder foundation to make the skin look smoother.
  • Use powder foundation on neck, ears and chest too so that you don’t seem to have a painted face.
  • Use a concealer shade similar to the foundation and blend both well.
  • Learn some camouflage makeup tricks and buy its products to use on your big day.
  • If you have combination skin, use water based foundation and a dry sponge.
  • Hide the under eye circles by applying concealer. Blend it towards the nose and use downward strokes.
  • For a perfect eye shape, use a small brush to blend a medium tone color from just below the brow arch downwards in a semi-circle motion.
  • Use light peach eye shadow as eyelid base.
  • Choose lip liner that blends easily with lipstick for that soft glossy look that looks good in photographs too.
  • Place the focus on the face either on eyes or on lip and underplay the other with neutral pink or brown shades.
  • Thin and small lips look more sensuous with light lip colors while fuller lips can use deep shades.

Cosmetics, Cosmetics Tips

Cosmetics
Cosmetics, If you are a girl, you know that applying makeup is a necessity in this generation however it can be a pain. Well, in this article, we are going to discuss three major reasons why you should choose permanent cosmetics and how this procedure will change your life, save you a ton of time and how it will make you look beautiful!
Time saving is the first reason why many women are choosing cosmetic tattooing over applying their makeup each and every day. It is a great alternative and one that will make you look your best all of the time. When you look your best, don’t you typically feel your best as well? This is exactly what permanent cosmetics can do for you.
Time saving is certainly a great reason why to choose cosmetic tattooing, however saving money is another reason why you should this great technique. No longer will you have to waste your money on mascara that will not last or lip liner that will fade or even eyeliner that will smudge and smear, instead you can have all of this permanently on your face, which will make you look natural and beautiful all of the time. Saving money is important in this day and age and this type of tattooing technique can help you save a lot of money in the long run.
Finally, the last reason that we are going to explore and the best is the reason of having perfectly applied makeup all of the time. This is what permanent cosmetics can do for you. Eye Makeup, Eye Makeup Tips

Eye Makeup
Beauty & Makeup Tips,  Now is the time to shine and leave your beautifully painted eyes soft, pure and alluring. Since, most of women can’t live without makeup even in hot temperature, here are a few pointers to keep your persona alive with fresh summer eye makeup.
For fresh summer eye makeup first switch on to those products that can resist heat and these includes waterproof mascara, the choice of eye pencils over liquid eyeliners and eye shadows that harden after makeup application.
Eye Makeup
Eye Makeup is Dermatologist’s answer for an eye cream that addresses more than just hydrating the skin. The skin around the eye area is very delicate; it is no wonder that the eyes are one of the first places to show the signs of aging and damage. The skin around the eyes is thinner and does not contain any oil glands.

Lips Look, Lips Care Tips

Lip Care, When you come across someone, the first thing that catches your attention is the face. Soft healthy pink lips usually draw attention. They lend a fresh invigorating look to your face. Lips are the most sensitive part of our body and therefore require constant nurturing. Thus, it is of prime importance to pay attention to your lips. Dry chapped lips spoil the whole look and make your face appear dull, pale and unattractive. Well, in this article, we will present you with a couple of tips on how to take care of your lips, so read on.
Lip care does not comprise of a single task, but a series of activities that need to be performed on a constant basis to get a fruitful result. Luscious lips set the perfect mood for romance. To reduce the proximity between you and your partner, take regular care of your lips, so that they look fresh and healthy. Luscious lips also provide you the opportunity to stand out in the crowd. They bring you in the limelight.
Protect your lips from the harsh weather conditions. Eat plenty of green veggies and fruits. Gorge on foods rich in Vitamins. Increase your intake of water. Apply lip balm and keep your lips moisturized. Lips will look beautiful and attractive only if they are healthy. Applying makeup on dry chapped dark lips will not make them appear eye-catchy. It can only invite unwanted attention that brings forth the fact that your lips are dry and chapped. Refrain from licking your lips.
In this section, we will throw light on the following aspects related to lips:
Lip Balms
Lips go through a bad time during cold and dry months. They have a real tough time coping with the worst climatic conditions. Dry chapped lips, which are the result of lack of moisture in the skin, lead to embarrassment and frustration. It is here that lip balms come to rescue.
Lip Gloss
Lip gloss not just lends a moisturizing effect to your lips, but also makes it appear luscious. It is one among the various cosmetic products that women use to adorn themselves. It brings about a major change in the way your lips look. To cater to the varying needs of customers, there is a multitude of lip glosses offered in the market.
Lip Augmentation
In the present era, people are becoming extremely conscious about their looks. The desire to look beautiful and attractive is so deeply rooted in people, especially women that they are resorting to almost every possible procedure that enhances their beauty. Lip augmentation surgery is increasingly gaining popularity, as it helps a great deal in making the lips appear attractive.
Chapped Dry lips
When it comes to body care, lips are usually deprived of pampering and nourishment. Since lips are the most visible part of the human body, they truly deserve special attention. When the lips lose their moisture, they become chapped and dry.
Cosmetic Lip Tattoo
Cosmetic lip tattooing is not a trend of the present era. Infact, it has been practiced since the bygone times. Its origin can be traced back to the times of ancient African and Mediterranean cultures. It is a primitive body art that has been more often resorted to by women to give their lips a perfect look and enhance their beauty.
Lip Piercing
In the contemporary times, people are becoming simply crazy about body piercings, especially lip and tongue piercing. Lip piercing is very much in vogue these days. It is a type of body piercing which involves penetrating into the lip or the area surrounding the lip. Lip piercing was initially practiced by the African tribes, who wore ornamental lip plates in their lower lip.
How to Apply Lipstick
